Tokyo stocks open lower on tech falls, Toyota earnings in focus

TOKYO (Kyodo) — Tokyo stocks opened lower Wednesday as technology shares tracked overnight declines of their U.S. counterparts, while investors waited for Toyota Motor Corp.’s earnings report due later in the day.

In the first 15 minutes of trading, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average fell 303.77 points, or 0.78 percent, from Tuesday to 38,531.33. The broader Topix index was down 18.43 points, or 0.67 percent, at 2,727.79.

On the top-tier Prime Market, decliners were led by transportation equipment, securities house and nonferrous metal issues.

At 9 a.m., the U.S. dollar fetched 154.78-79 yen compared with 154.65-75 yen in New York and 154.11-12 yen in Tokyo at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

The euro was quoted at $1.0748-0752 and 166.36-43 yen against $1.0750-0760 and 166.30-40 yen in New York and $1.0764-0765 and 165.89-93 yen in Tokyo late Tuesday afternoon.
