Google is currently testing a new capability on its phone app that enables users to quickly convert a regular voice call into a Google Meet-powered video call. In the latest version of the phone app, Google has integrated a dedicated button to allow users to easily switch from a voice call to a video call with just a touch of a button.
According to a report by Android Authority, this feature is currently available for select Pixel smartphone users who are running the latest version of Android 14 with the up-to-date phone app. Google is likely to roll out this feature to more Android smartphones in the coming days.
A similar feature has been available on iPhones for years, which integrates FaceTime into the phone app to enable native video calling. In fact, some telcos in India also allow users to switch from a voice call to a video call. With the upcoming feature, an Android smartphone user will not only be able to make video calls with another Android user, but they can also initiate a video call with an iPhone user, given they have the Meet app installed on their phone.
If the other user does not have the Google Meet app installed on their phone, it will prompt users to invite the person to download the Meet app. Although this feature works natively on the phone app, it is deeply integrated with the Meet app to initiate video calling.
Unlike an iPhone, which does not allow users to set a third-party app as the native phone app, Android offers more flexibility. In fact, most Android smartphone brands ship devices with their own phone app, which enables features like auto-call recording and the ability to switch from a voice call to a video call or vice versa.
