In January, Sam’s Club rolled out its artificial intelligence scanning technology that is located at store exits.

The archway is meant to scan customers’ carts as they exit the store.

However, one shopper is skeptical about the new method.

“If’ ‘it checks out’, what could possibly go wrong if it erroneously accuses one a crime, not to speak of more joblessness as regrettably the future of humanity gets bleaker by the day,” read a tweet posted to X, formerly known as Twitter, in response to the stores new changes.

Another customer commented that the new AI feature was already implemented at their local location but it “gets a lot of false reads.”

“This was started about [two weeks] ago at the Sam’s Club near us & they are using staff to verify what the scanners check. Our order showed [four] items [that] weren’t in my cart & the monitor told us it gets a lot of false reads. They don’t like stacked items in carts,” the tweet read.

CONVENIENCE FOR CUSTOMERS

The major change was made after the company continued to receive reviews from customers that asked for a faster shopping experience.

Sam’s Club acknowledged its customer’s points and said, “We aspire to be the most convenient place to shop,” according to Sam’s Club Chief Merchant Megan Crozier during the Walmart Keynote.

Crozier shared a commercial explaining how the new AI technology worked.

After customers pay, computer vision and digital technology take pictures of the cart and verify payment for the items as they exit the store.

“At Sam’s Club, we care about every second a member spends with us so eliminating even the few seconds it takes to scan a receipt at the exit door is well worth it,” Crozier said.

Crozier also promised that Sam’s Club will “keep finding ways to give our members what they want most, great items, unmatched convenience, and time back for the more important things in life.”

The company has already implemented the AI scanners at 10 locations and plans to roll it out to its almost 600 stores in the United States by the end of the year, according to a news release.

How does Sam’s Club AI cart scanner work?

Sam’s Club has decided to stop checking customers receipts and instead, use AI machines to scan carts.

Shoppers can either pay at a register or use Sam’s Club Scan & Go through its app.

Once customers pay, at the exit area of the club, computer vision and digital technology take pictures of carts and verify payment for all items.

The company hopes this new method will reduce long wait times at receipt checks.

‘I’D LOVE THAT’

Though customers are not unanimously excited for the change to roll out, some shared that they are looking forward to it.

“As a customer myself, I’d love that,” a user tweeted.

“Scan & Go is already very smooth, this will elevate the customer experience,” another person wrote.

“If only @Costco would get it together and catch up to what @SamsClub is doing with their scan and go and receipt check elimination,” a third person wrote.

“I’m looking forward to this as a customer,” a shopper wrote on a Reddit thread.

“I shop at Costco and Sam’s and while my Sam’s is a smaller store, getting out is a pain. Being able to officially use Scan & Go and being able to walk right out will be awesome. That’s if I don’t just get my stuff loaded curbside.”
