Pavan Davuluri: Microsoft has appointed Pavan Davuluri, a 23-year veteran at the company, as the new head of its combined Windows and Surface teams. This significant move follows the departure of the previous leader, Panos Panay, who left for Amazon last year.

Pavan Davuluri, who previously oversaw Microsoft’s hardware endeavors, will now oversee all aspects of Windows client and cloud experiences, as well as Surface hardware development. This consolidation consolidates Microsoft’s operating system and devices efforts under one leader for the first time since Panay’s exit. Mikhail Parakhin, the previous leader of the Windows and web experiences group, is now “exploring new roles” outside the company.

Strategic Rationale Behind the Shake-Up

In an internal memo, Microsoft’s Rajesh Jha cited the need for a “holistic approach to building silicon, systems, experiences, and devices…for this AI era” as the driving force behind the move. This underscores Microsoft’s focus on integrating hardware and software experiences to deliver comprehensive solutions in the era of artificial intelligence.

Microsoft Returns to the Earlier Structure

The internal reorganization marks a return to the earlier structure within Microsoft’s Engineering and Devices organization, which is headed by Rajesh Jha. This realignment aims to foster collaboration and innovation across Windows and Surface teams to deliver cohesive and integrated products and experiences.
