Google I/O conference to start on May 14

Google’s I/O developer conference is set to start about two months from now on May 14. The I/O 2024 keynote will be available for anyone to watch virtually as it happens.

This year’s developer conference is likely to be dominated by artificial intelligence, especially with all the flak the company has been getting over its Gemini chatbot, and especially its AI image generation feature. OpenAI released its wildly successful ChatGPT in November 2022 but Google has not really had a solid answer to it in the almost two years since.

Ever since OpenAI’s GPT-4 got integrated into rival Microsoft’s Bing search engine, alarm bells have been ringing for Google. The fact that Microsoft Bing will provide customised AI generated responses to search queries means it could potentially be a threat to Google’s core business. The search and advertising giant did release its “search generative experiences,” which has been rolled out to over 120 countries since it was rolled out in November 2023.

But between that and Gemini and Gemma, Google’s response to the new AI arms race has been nothing but a shadow of what competitor Microsoft and its partner OpenAI have been doing with the integration of generative AI into the former’s products.

Apart from AI, Android 15 and its features will also likely be unveiled at Google I/O 2023. There is also a good chance that many of the company’s core services, like Google Photos, Gmail and others, will get big updates. And since Google revealed the midrange Pixel 7a during Google I/O 2023, there is a good chance that it could launch a new Pixel 8a during this year’s conference. I/O could also give Google an opportunity to talk about Android XR, especially considering how Apple’s new Vision Pro caught everyone’s attention this year.

Festive offer

The actual agenda for the event and more details will be revealed closer to when it happens but online registrations are already open and they are free.
