Georgia Tech wins delayed Game, FSU wins series

After a 21-hour, 15-minute weather delay, No. 10 Florida State (39-14, 17-12 ACC) fell to visiting Georgia Tech (31-21, 15-15) 11-10 Saturday evening at Dick Howser Stadium. The Seminoles had clinched the series Friday, beating the Yellow Jackets 11-3 in what was scheduled to be a doubleheader.

Depending on the outcome of the Virginia-Virginia Tech game, Florida State will be either the No. 4 or 5 seed at next week’s ACC Championship. Opponents will be announced later Saturday; dates and times for FSU’s games will be announced Sunday.

In game one, Florida State used an eight-run third inning to beat the Yellow Jackets 11-3 and clinch the series. Tied 1-1 entering the frame, Jaime Ferrer hit a three-run home run, all nine Seminoles reached base – including eight with a hit – and Max Williams added a three-run double to pull away.

Cam Smith had three hits in the game, his fifth straight game with multiple hits.

Carson Dorsey (5-3) matched a career high with 6.0 innings pitched, allowing three runs. Florida State is 6-1 in Dorsey’s seven starts.

In game two, FSU broke a tie in the bottom of the seventh inning before the game was halted due to lightning. Florida State leads 7-6 with two outs.

Georgia Tech led 5-0 after three innings before FSU stormed back with five runs of its own in the bottom of the fourth. James Tibbs III broke a 5-5 tie with a solo home run in the fifth inning, his 24th of the season and 51st of his career.

After Georgia Tech plated an unearned run in the top of the seventh, Smith beat a throw at the plate on a Marco Dinges groundball to give FSU the lead again.

After the delay, both teams scored three runs in the eighth inning before Georgia Tech plated a pair in the top of the ninth for the victory.
