Back to normal life with a liver transplant – ‘Gleneagles Hospitals’ organized Walkathon & Cyclothon

Hyderabad, India, April 19, 2024: 2024 World Liver day Theme is to ‘ Be vigilant, Get Regular Liver Check-ups and Prevent Fatty Liver Diseases’ which is to promote awareness of liver-related diseases with a healthy lifestyle and adhere to physical and mental health on the occasion of World Liver Day. On this occasion ‘Gleneagles Hospitals’ has organized a cyclotron and walkathon, and created awareness on Liver diseases in general public.

Speaking on the occasion Dr. Nagesh K Rao, CEO of ‘Gleneagles Hospitals’ said, that Gleneagles Hospital is the only centre in Hyderabad that has successfully conducted more than 1000 liver transplant surgeries.

Senior Hepatologist and Liver Transplant Physician Dr. Chandankumar said, that the main causes of liver-related diseases are alcohol, fatty liver, and obesity. Approximately, 15 to 25% of patients of fatty liver can progress to cirrhosis. Most patients with end stage cirrhosis of no obvious etiology come from previous unrecognized fatty liver.

He further added, Fatty liver is projected to be the leading cause of liver transplantation by 2025. Liver is an organ that can be easily damaged if you don’t take good care of it. It is also an organ which can be easily repaired or regenerated if damage is identified and treated in the right time. This underlines the importance of World liver day and spreading awareness about liver related diseases. If a person has diabetes they need to take extra care of their liver. It is estimated that 8-32% of people suffering from diabetes in India are affected, and India is the diabetes capital of the region. The prevalence of diabetes likely to increase in the coming days.

Dr. Amarnath – liver transplant and HPB surgeon emphasized, that people should take care of liver by regular exercise and proper diet to prevent liver diseases. Also advised people to have regular and preventive checkups to maintain good liver health. Later Saifabad ACP – Mr. Sanjay Kumar started the Cyclothon and walkathon by waving the flag. Hyderabad Cycling Group has participated in Cyclothon under the leadership of Mr. Ravinder – founder HCG.

Liver Transplant and HPB surgeon Dr. Rajagopal Acharya, Dr. Smith and Dr. Ganesh also participated in the event. On this occasion ‘Gleneagles Hospitals’ Management felicitated liver transplant patients who have undergone surgery and donors who are leading normal life.
