Google Pixel 8a has to be tech industry’s worst kept secret, here’s everything you can expect from it

All the tech circles are buzzing with only two things these days. One is how Apple plans to redeem the iPad come May 7, 2024, and the other, Google’s next (and probably the last) shot at making a budget Pixel, aka Pixel 8a. Funnily enough, history is repeating itself in case of the Google Pixel, which come what may, continues to be one of the industry’s worst kept secrets. Not that the new iPads haven’t leaked, but the Pixel 8a, well, it’s leaked way more substantially.

Basically, everything about the Google Pixel 8a from base design to colour choices, specs, features, and tentative pricing have leaked, leaving nothing to the imagination. Google is yet to announce the launch date, but speculation is rife it could be at (or around) Google I/O 2024 which is scheduled for May 14, that is a week after Apple Let Loose 2024 iPad event. Whatever be the case, we will surely know soon enough.

Google Pixel 8a: Everything we know so far

As for what’s cooking, the Google Pixel 8a will be the most affordable Pixel phone in Google’s current Pixel 8 series. By how much, we can’t say for sure yet, but speculation is rife that a variant with 128GB of storage could set you back by USD 499 (roughly Rs 42,000). The 128GB Pixel 7a was a cool Rs 43,999 in India at launch and so chances are the Pixel 8a could be anywhere near that or maybe more unless Google is planning a big surprise.

A new report from Android Headlines drops the ball on virtually every tech spec of the upcoming Google Pixel 8a. The phone in question is said to come with a 6.1-inch 1080p+ OLED display with a bumped up 120Hz refresh rate and up to 2,000 nits of peak brightness. Google switched from 60Hz to 90Hz on the Pixel 7a so a bump up to 120Hz on the Pixel 8a is a welcome upgrade if true. The panel is said to be protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3.

There is a very high possibility that the Pixel 8a will be powered by the Google Tensor G3 but an even bigger surprise that the “budget” Pixel phone may be on route to also get up to 7-year software support same as the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro.

Camera specs will reportedly remain unchanged and so, we’re probably looking at the same 64-megapixel primary OIS and 13-megapixel ultrawide setup. A next-gen upgrade will see features like Magic Editor, Best Take, and Ultra HDR coming to this phone, the report adds.

Lastly, the Pixel 8a will reportedly come with a 4,492mAh (typical) battery with support for Qi wireless charging. The Pixel 8a is said to come in four colours at launch including Porcelain, Obsidian, Bay, and Aloe though a fourth colour called Coral may come further down the line as a mid-cycle refresh.
