$878,000 in federal funds to help Wake County Sheriff’s Office acquire new tech from body cams to vehicle radars

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — The Wake County Sheriff’s Office just secured hundreds of thousands of dollars in federal funding to buy body cameras and other technology for the sheriff’s office.

Congressman Wiley Nickel and Wake County Sheriff Willie Rowe announced the funding Tuesday.

The money is a part of federal funding to purchase new equipment and technology like body cameras for correction officers in jails.

“It’s gonna help us with officer safety, security of our inmates but also transparency. There’s an actual recording of what occurs during our interactions with our inmates with staff members and with the public,” said Wake County Sheriff, Willie Rowe.

They’re also planning to use the funding to purchase radars for deputy vehicles, something Rowe says is needed.

“We’ve received so many complaints of speeders, careless and reckless driving, impaired driving…also the cameras are going to help us enforce the laws of the roadway, keeping our community safe,” said Rowe.

Congressman Nickel also announced a $1.7 million community project funding request he submitted to the house appropriations committee.

If approved, the money would go toward the Wake County Sheriff’s Office’s Technology and Equipment Project. It would allow them to them to purchase network devices and vehicle alarms.

Wake County commissioner, Don Mial, told the crowd he’s happy to see the funding.

“Research shows that more cameras mean fewer complaints against our law enforcement,” said Mial.

Nickel also honored Sheriff Rowe during the announcement, commending him for his service in law enforcement.
