Tesco has had a huge IT breakdown just hours after Sainsbury’s was hit with technical problems.
The supermarket has had to cancel some supermarket deliveries today after the issue affected its services, it stated, although it has not gone into details of which regions have been affected.
A Tesco spokesperson told The Mirror: “We are working to fix a technical issue which has meant we have had to cancel some online orders that were due for delivery today. We’re sorry for the inconvenience.” People will receive an email if they are affected and if the order was cancelled they will not be charged.
Many people have taken to social media to comment on the system crashes at the supermarket giants on the back of McDonald’s crashing yesterday. One person wrote: “McDonald’s yesterday, Sainsbury and now Tesco today having system issues.”
Earlier today, Sainsbury’s said it has a “technical issue” which is affecting a “vast majority” of online customers and at the same time angry shoppers have claimed they have been unable to pay with bank cards at tills.
Sainsbury’s informed people on social media of a problem and there have been long queues at ATMs while some customers have said that there was no advance warning as they shopped in the stores.
A person said: “No one told us till we got to tills. noone told us about it..only had fiver on me.. unfortunately mobile phones don’t give out cash.” Another said: “Proactively contacting customers?? Sat on hold for over an hour to find out what’s happening with my order, no hold music so not even sure sat in a queue.”
A further wrote on X: “Eerily quiet at my local Sainsbury’s this morning where a ‘technical issue’ means it’s cash only at the tills. This car park would normally be rammed on a Saturday.” Sainsbury’s has said that many online orders are being affected by the glitch and it will contact customers with the issue likely to cause a problem for the rest of the day.
The supermarket stated that it was “working hard to fix the issue” and also apologised to angry customers. People were told they would be contacted so that they can rebook orders but some said they had received no calls.
A Sainsbury’s spokesperson told The Mirror: ”Due to an error with an overnight software update, we are experiencing issues with contactless payments. All of our stores are open as usual today, accepting chip and pin and cash payments. Unfortunately, this also means we will not be able to deliver the vast majority of today’s Groceries Online orders and we are currently unable to contact customers directly, but will contact them as soon as we can to rebook orders. We apologise to customers for the inconvenience and are working hard to fix the issue.”
