Virginia Tech women overcome Kitley’s absence, advance to ACC semifinals

Georgia Amoore scored 23 of her 27 points in the second half for her 15th 20-point game this season, and short-handed Virginia Tech beat Miami 55-47 on Friday at Greensboro Coliseum to advance to the ACC Tournament semifinals for the third straight year.

Top-seeded and 11th-ranked Tech (24-6), which hadn’t played since Sunday, moves on to play No. 14 Notre Dame on Saturday. The Hokies dropped a 71-58 contest at Notre Dame on Feb. 29.

Virginia Tech was without three-time ACC Player of the Year Elizabeth Kitley due to a knee injury. She was ruled out for the ACC Tournament and will be re-evaluated next week in hopes she could play in the NCAAs.

Amoore took over in the second half. She scored eight of Virginia Tech’s 11 points in the third quarter, including a long jumper from the corner with 43 seconds left and a layup just before the buzzer to extend the lead to 36-33.

Virginia Tech scored six straight points by making a basket on three straight possessions to take a 45-37 lead and was ahead the rest of the way.

Clara Strack, a 6-foot-5 freshman, filled in for Kitley down low with 10 points, five rebounds and two blocks in 27 minutes.

Jasmyne Roberts scored 12 points and Shayeann Day-Wilson added 11 for Miami (19-12). Ja’Leah Williams grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds.

More ACC quarterfinals

No. 10 N.C. State 54, Duke 51: Princess Anne High alumna Aziaha James scored 16 points, and the second-seeded Wolfpack overcame three quarters’ worth of offensive struggles.

Freshman Zoe Brooks added 12 points for the Wolfpack. That included a critical driving basket past Taina Mair with 58.8 seconds left. Mair missed a 3-pointer for the tie on Duke’s last possession.

No. 14 Notre Dame 77, No. 24 Louisville 68: Sonia Citron scored 26 points, Hannah Hidalgo added 21 and both players made double-digit free throws for the Irish.

Louisville center Olivia Cochran made a layup to get within 71-68 with 30.9 left, but Louisville coach Jeff Walz argued with the officials soon after that and was given his second technical foul of the game.

Junior colleges

Bryant & Stratton 63, Southwest Virginia Community College 48: The Bobcats (27-3) advanced to the National Junior College Athletic Association Region 10 Division II South Atlantic District championship game in Brunswick, North Carolina.

Yvette Sandifer, a Landstown High graduate, scored 20 points, six rebounds and four assists for Bryant & Stratton. Wisdom Banks, from Salem High, had 16 points on 7-for-8 shooting. Latanya Berry had 12 points and 12 rebounds.

The Bobcats were to take on Cape Fear CC for the title Saturday.

Big Ten quarterfinals

No. 3 Iowa 95, Penn State 62: Caitlin Clark broke the NCAA Division I record for 3-pointers in a season by a woman or man, finishing with 24 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists on a poor shooting night in Minneapolis.

Clark missed her first 11 3s before finally connecting in the fourth quarter. It was her 163rd 3-pointer of the season, surpassing Stephen Curry of Davidson and Darius McGhee of Liberty for the most by a D-I player. Clark finished 2 of 14 from long range and 5 of 19 overall, but Iowa (27-4) still had little trouble with Penn State (19-12).

Sydney Affolter scored a career-high 18 points and had nine rebounds for Iowa. Gabbie Marshall scored 15, Taylor McCabe had 12 and Kate Martin had 11 points and nine boards.

Maryland 82, No. 4 Ohio State 61: Shyanne Sellers had 25 points, eight rebounds and seven assists to lead Maryland’s upset in Indianapolis. Brinae Alexander and Jakia Brown-Turner each scored 19 points and Faith Masonius added 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Terrapins. Maryland improved to 19-12 and delivered the type of statement performance that ought to help secure an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.

The Buckeyes fell to 25-5 as their quest for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament took a hit.

Nebraska 73, Michigan State 61: Alexis Markowski had 22 points and 12 rebounds, Natalie Potts added 15 points and 11 rebounds and Nebraska (21-10) advanced to meet Maryland. MSU dropped to 22-8.

Pac-12 semifinals

No. 2 Stanford 66, Oregon State 57: Hannah Jump scored 20 points for Stanford, which rallied from a 16-point first-half deficit in Las Vegas.

The Cardinal outscored Oregon State 23-8 in the third quarter and held off a late surge by the Beavers. Stanford (27-4) will play for its 16th Pac-12 championship Sunday against Southern California.

The Cardinal’s Cameron Brink had 16 points and 12 rebounds. Raegan Beers led the Beavers (24-7) with 17 points.

No. 5 Southern California 80, No. 7 UCLA 70, 2 OTs: JuJu Watkins had 33 points and 10 rebounds forthe Trojans (25-5), who outscored the Bruins 13-3 in the second overtime.

Charisma Osborne led UCLA (25-6) with 21 points. Lauren Betts added 17 points and 18 rebounds.

SEC quarterfinals

No. 8 LSU 78, Auburn 48: Flau’jae Johnson scored 17 of her 25 points in the first half, Angel Reese had 18 points and 11 rebounds, and LSU raced to a 21-0 lead. Second-seeded LSU will face No. 3 seed Mississippi in Saturday’s semifinals.

Atlantic 10 quarterfinals

Richmond 70, Loyola Chicago 54: The top-seeded Spiders (27-5) got 18 points from Addie Budnik and 13 from Maggie Doogan at the new Henrico Sports & Events Center, where the crowd was announced at 3,550. Grace Townsend had eight points and nine assists. Sam Galanopoulos scored a game-high 22 points for the Ramblers.

Duquesne 63, George Mason 62: In a game with seven lead changes, the Dukes (20-11) edged the Patriots (23-7), likely relegating George Mason to the WNIT.

Tess Myers led Duquesne with 12 points, all from 3-point range. Megan McConnell had eight points, 10 rebounds and six assists.

George Mason’s Sonia Smith scored a game-high 24 points, while Paula Suarez contributed 17.
Lake Taylor High graduate Jazmyn Doster had five points and six rebounds, but Hampton High alumna

Kennedy Harris missed the game with a back injury she suffered at VCU when she collided with a stanchion under the basket.

Saint Louis 65, VCU 63: Ocean Lakes High alumna Kyla McMakin had 16 points and Peyton Kennedy had 22, including the 1,000th of her career, as the Billikens (16-17) upended the second-seeded Rams (26-5).

Former William & Mary player and Longwood coach Rebecca Tillett’s defending champion Billikens will face Rhode Island in a semifinal Saturday. Saint Louis hit 19 of 21 free throws to VCU’s 5 of 10.

Atlantic 10 Player of the Year Sarah Te-Biasu scored 22 points and Mary-Anna Asare compiled 16 for VCU, which likely will go to the WNIT.

Sun Belt quarterfinals

James Madison 77, Southern Mississippi 49: The third-seeded Dukes (22-10) jumped to a 44-10 lead over the Golden Eagles (18-13) in Pensacola, Florida, and will take on seventh-seeded Louisiana in a semifinal at 3 p.m. Eastern Sunday.

Peyton McDaniel had 21 points and 11 rebounds for defending champion JMU. Former Lake Taylor High and Old Dominion player Ashanti Barnes had 15 points and nine rebounds.

Big 12 first round

West Virginia 70, Cincinnati 55: Junior guard JJ Quinerly, from Lake Taylor High, led all scorers with 18 points, shooting 58.3% from the field, as the Mountaineers (24-6) advanced to the quarterfinals in Kansas City, Missouri. They will meet Kansas State at 9 p.m. Eastern Saturday.

Men

Junior colleges

Bryant & Stratton 92, Pitt Community College 89: The Bobcats (22-9) found their way into the National Junior College Athletic Association Region 10 Division II South Atlantic District championship game in Wilmington, North Carolina.

They were to face Davidson-Davie Community College for the title Saturday.

Big South quarterfinals

Longwood 69, Winthrop 56: Walyn Napper had 20 points for the fifth-seeded Lancers (19-13), who will play top-seeded tournament host High Point in a semifinal Saturday.

Napper had six rebounds for the Lancers. Emanuel Richards scored 11 points and added five rebounds.

Sin’Cere McMahon finished with 19 points for the Eagles (17-15).

High Point 77, Radford 63: Abdoulaye Thiam and Duke Miles each scored 20 points for the top-seeded Panthers (25-7), who overcame an 18-4 deficit.

Juslin Bodo Bodo had 14 points and finished 7 of 9 from the floor.

Chandler Turner led the way for the Highlanders (16-17) with 19 points. Justin Archer added 15 points and 10 rebounds for Radford.

Southern Conference first round

East Tennessee State 98, VMI 66: Tyler Rice scored 13 points for seventh-seeded East Tennessee State in a 98-66 win over 10th-seeded VMI in Asheville, North Carolina.

ETSU will play second-seeded UNC Greensboro in Saturday’s quarterfinals.

Rice finished 5 of 8 from the field for the Buccaneers (17-15). The Keydets (4-28), who finished their season with 12 consecutive losses, were led by Taeshaud Jackson, who recorded 16 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists.

NCAA Division III round of 16

Calvin 72, Randolph-Macon 59: The Yellow Jackets (25-5), ranked fourth by d3hoops.com, were knocked out of the tournament in Hartford, Connecticut, by the No. 10 Knights (25-4) of Michigan. Jalen Overway had 29 points and 12 rebounds for Calvin.

Daniel Mbangue led R-MC with 16 points and had six rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Calvin went ahead 12-6 with a 10-0 run and didn’t relinquish the lead.

Hampden-Sydney 91, Rowan 76: The host Tigers (29-2), ranked No. 1 by d3hoops.com, outscored the Profs (21-8) before 1,200 at Fleet Gym to reach the quarterfinals.

Chase Turner, from Virginia Beach’s Landstown High, had six points and seven rebounds in 19 minutes off the bench for H-SC.

The Knights will play host to No. 19 Nebraska Wesleyan at 7 p.m. Saturday for a Final Four berth.

Senior Josiah Hardy led H-SC with 20 points, and fifth-year Ryan Clements had 18.

Regular season

No. 25 Dayton 91, VCU 86, OT: Kobe Elvis hit back-to-back 3-pointers and a pair of free throws in the last 1:09 of overtime for the host Flyers (24-6, 14-4 Atlantic 10) in a white-knuckle final regular-season game.

Max Shulga hit a 3-pointer to get VCU within two points with 4 seconds left, but Enoch Cheeks and DaRon Holmes II hit foul shots to seal it for Dayton, which finished 15-0 at home.

Dayton was locked into the No. 3 tournament seed. VCU (19-12, 11-7) missed an opportunity for a double bye and got the No. 5 seed.

Boise State 79, No. 21 San Diego State 77, OT: Cam Martin made two free throws with 1.7 seconds left, and Max Rice heaved in a highlight-reel 3-pointer from about 40 feet earlier in overtime as the Broncos (22-9, 13-5) kept alive their chances of sharing the Mountain West title.

Jaedon LeDee scored 21 points for the Aztecs (22-9, 11-7).
