Tech Tuesday offered at the Le Mars Public Library

LE MARS — The Le Mars Public Library will provide basic tech help for people who are new to computers, haven’t used them for a while, are a little unsure and uncomfortable, or just need a bit of a refresher with tech devices.

Kara Hitchler, Librarian at Le Mars Public Library, is the key staff member for this new program. Hitchler was inspired to offer this service after attending the Association of Rural and Small Libraries Conference in Wichita, Kansas.

Hitchler said, “I attended a session on how small and rural libraries teach basic technical skills and thought that it would be a good program to offer at or library.”

Hitchler and other staff will offer free assistance with technology on a walk-in basis from 2-4 p.m., each Tuesday from March 5 through May 28.

According to Hitchler, “People often come to the library to ask questions about technology, such as printing out return labels and using eBooks. If it is busy, it is difficult to help someone learn something at the front desk. The staff thought it would be a good idea to set aside time and space for people to come in and get help more personalized help.”

Tech Tuesday assistance can help people learn more about basic cellphone and tablet use, how to get email set-up, register a Facebook account, print a mailing label from a smartphone, download an app, introduce Google Workspace and Microsoft Office just to name a few options. “This is also a great time to ask questions about the tech the library offers, such eBooks, audiobooks, streaming with Kanopy and how to renew books online,” said Hitchler.

Hitchler has been working at the library since 2019, has a master’s degree in Gerontology and is skilled at working with a wide variety of people and ages.

Tech Tuesday will be held every Tuesday from 2-4 p.m., in the library meeting room until May 28. No registration or sign-up is necessary. Assistance may be limited to 20 minutes if people are waiting. To make the most of your time during Tech Tuesday, please be prepared to enter your own passwords, Apple ID, etc. The library staff will not be able to help people complete forms or provide medical, tax or legal assistance.
