Free Coaching Scheme for SC And OBC Students

Under the Free Coaching Scheme for SC and OBC, applications were invited in May 2022, through online portal for selection of 3500 students for selection year 2022-23. A total of 50,177 applicants have submitted their applications through the online portal under the scheme.

This scheme is a Central Sector scheme and implemented directly by the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment all over India. There is no provision of State wise allocation of slots under the scheme. However, as per the information furnished by the students while submitting online applications under the scheme, State-wise number of students who applied under the scheme.

Under the scheme, the total available slots are 3500 out of which 2100 slots are allotted to the courses for which qualifying exam is graduation (Bachelor’s level) and remaining 1400 slots are allotted for the courses for which qualifying exam is Class 12 (intermediate level).

Out of the total received 50,177 applications, 44,934 students have applied in graduate level category and 5,243 students have applied in intermediate level category.

The Scheme of Free Coaching is implemented with the objective to provide coaching of good quality for economically disadvantaged Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Other Backward Classes (OBCs) candidates to enable them to appear in competitive examinations and succeed in obtaining an appropriate job in Public/Private Sector.

Under the scheme, students are selected by the department on merit of marks obtained in class 10th and 12th depending on the course(s) applied for coaching. Scholarship is released directly by the Department to the beneficiary students through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). The selected students have the liberty to choose any coaching centre of their choice at any location in India. At present, there is no institute empaneled under the scheme. The details of course wise minimum learning hours prescribed under the scheme are at Annexure-II.

Guidelines of the scheme are published on the online portal for information of the students and institutes. As per the scheme guidelines, course wise duration/fee are fixed. However no online resource material is shared with the coaching centres as the institutes are not empaneled under the scheme. No proposal for peer-based mentorship programme is under consideration in this Ministry.
