The Pixel smartphones are known for being among the first set of devices to receive updates, but that isn’t always the case, as supported Pixel smartphones are yet to receive the Aug. 2022 security patch. One of the perks of getting a Pixel smartphone is timely software updates. For as long as a Pixel smartphone is supported, it will receive updates monthly that bring security fixes and sometimes new features.
Only a few manufacturers can match Google in this regard, with the majority releasing security updates intermittently. Some brands don’t even release security updates for their phones until a new Android version is released. And when they eventually roll out the OS upgrade, it sometimes comes with an outdated security patch.
The Aug. 2022 security patch was supposed to begin rolling out to the Pixel smartphones on the first Monday of the month, which is also the first day of the month. However, to a lot of users’ surprise, according to Android Police, while Google did release a Pixel Update Bulletin for the month detailing the security fixes, the update itself didn’t arrive for supported models. A few days later, Google released an update for the Pixel 6a, Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, but instead of the security patch, it was a fix for a GPS issue plaguing all three phones. This fix is expected to roll out to users in phases over the next week.
Android 13 Isn’t The Cause Of The Delay
In the post detailing the release of the GPS fix for the Pixel 6 series, Google revealed that “the August 2022 update for all supported Pixel devices will begin rollout in the coming weeks.” However, it still didn’t say why the update had been delayed. Nevertheless, what seems to be clear is that the delay isn’t caused by Android 13.
As reported by Android Police, Google revealed the Aug. 2022 security patch would be based on Android 12 and not Android 13, which means it is not an issue with the new Android version that’s responsible for the delay. A deduction made from this info is that Android 13 will not begin rolling out until September at the earliest.
While Google has delayed the August security patch for its Pixel devices, Samsung has already begun rolling it out to its own phones, becoming the first manufacturer to release the update for its phones. According to SamMobile, the update has begun rolling out to the Galaxy S22 series in Europe, the U.S., Latin America, and Russia. The update has also arrived for the Galaxy S20 FE in select markets.
